Introducing artist Michael John Ashcroft

The North West of England has contributed many Great British artists throughout the twentieth century and into the twenty first century. From artists such as LS Lowry and Theodore Major, to contemporary artists such as Liam Spencer, the art world has benefited greatly from the contribution of North West artists.

As a North West gallery, we are delighted to now be associated with an artist with the potential to join this great history, an artist whose reputation and collectability is growing rapidly which will hopefully lead him to take his place amonst these great painters.

Drinkhouse - Croston

Born in 1969, Michael Ashcroft spent his formative years living in the picturesque Lancashire village of Croston, a village that still supplies subject matter for many of his paintings.

His passion for art stems from a feeling of wanting to capture light and dark in its purest form, transferring this to board using palette knife and brush.

Heading Home by Michael Ashcroft

Michael's remarkable story was featured recently in Lancashire Life magazine, an excerpt of which is detailed below:

MICHAEL Ashcroft is an inspirational man. Many would struggle to handle the shock of being diagnosed with a brain tumour at the age of 28. In his case, it led to him to rediscover a passion for painting.

Ten years down the line, his talent is burning bright. Sadly, so is his illness - a recent diagnosis revealed another tumour - but he won't let that keep him away from his easel.
While Michael admits that he uses his art as therapy he is now recognised as a real Lancashire talent, selling his work and winning awards. 'Painting is my passion,' says Michael from his home in Leyland.
'Without that and, of course, my wife Debbie's support I don't think I'd have got
through the last ten years. 'Some people get very down. Don't get me wrong I've been depressed at times, but painting has given me something else to focus on and I've met some fantastic people and friends along the way.'

Canal Street Manchester

In fact Michael's tumour helped him look at life in a different way. Until then he and his wife had been putting off having children but within a year
daughter Jessica, now nine, was born followed by Jamie two years later.

Growing up in the picturesque village of Croston, Michael was surrounded by artists from an early age and was encouraged to paint by his mother, a watercolourist.

'When I left school I was thinking about going to art college but my dad said I had to get a trade and so I got an engineering apprenticeship, 'he
says. 'I did it for years and hated it with a passion.'

Things were to change when his illness was first diagnosed. 'It wasn't cancerous but I had to go to Manchester Royal for a 12 hour operation to remove it,' he says. Thankfully they managed to get it all out but the operation left the left side of his face paralysed.' Michael has recovered well but he has speech and hearing difficulties. He was off work for 12 months and that is when he rediscovered his love of art. 'The poignant moment for me was in hospital after the operation. I remember looking at my reflection in the window. One side of my face was lit by the light the other was in the dark. It was as if the light side was the healthy side, the dark side the ill side and I remember thinking that was just how I'd been feeling.'

That light and dark revelation is probably the thing that defines Michael's style. As an artist he describes it as 'realist in an impressionistic' way, but the defining characteristic is the interaction between dark and light whether it's a view of Preston at night or countryside bathed in sunlight.

'It's not so much about the subject,' he explains, 'but the shapes, the colour and the light. As an artist, the one thing I'd hate is for them to be
described as twee.'

Flying South by Michael Ashcroft

The challenges that Michael has faced throughout his life have clearly influenced his paintings, all of which portray a genuine passion for painting and an appreciative vision of the landscape and world around us. As a gallery, we are delighted to be able to offer the original paintings of Michael Ashcroft and are certain that the number of admirers of his work will continue to increase as word of his talent spreads.

Sir Peter Blake Venice Suite

We are delighted to have acquired one of the final Sir Peter Blake "Venice Suite" portfolio box sets.

The box set is an edition of only 75, 25 of which were broken up to sell individually. Our complete set includes all 20 silkscreen prints from the set, supplied in the original presentation box and each individually signed by the artist.

The retail price of the prints individually is in excess of £16,000 but we are delighted to have secured one of the final full sets at only £10,000.

The Venice Suite was inspired by Blake's visit to Venice for the biennial in 2007. Each piece in the portfolio is a jewel of his trademark collage style. Blake combines traditional images of the city on the lagoon with visual excerpts from vintage children's books, photographs, postcards as well as details from works of old masters. This visual witticism is teamed with a palette of turquoise, gold and the grey of the stones of Venice to create a surreal fairytale vision of the city. Blake juxtaposes the baroque grandeur of the architectural icons of Venice with giant penguins, wartime bombers, Edwardian rowers and icebergs to name a few. The end result is a portfolio of works that are playful, imaginative, beautiful, immensely varied and representative of Sir Peter Blake’s unique vision.

‘Venice has been an inspiring place for me since my first visit in 1957 on a scholarship. I spend my life collecting images, newspaper cuttings and vintage postcards, which find their way into my work, and Venice has proven to be a treasure-trove of material. I returned to the city in 2007 and found some beautiful embroideries and illustrations which will become part of future works’ Sir Peter Blake.

Given that this portfolio is very close to sell out, please contact the gallery for up to date availability and pricing or contact us online at www.hepplestonefineart.com

Sir Peter Blake - New Releases

Two new limited edition releases have just been launched by the legendary Sir Peter Blake. It is difficult to know where to start when trying to introduce new people to Peter Blake and his work as his career and achievements are so vast - maybe describing him as the Godfather of Brit Pop and mentioning the iconic album cover to The Beatles Sgt Pepper album will suffice as a brief introduction.

The two new releases include the Second Real Target 25 Years Later and Marilyn Monroe Black.

The Second Real Target 25 Years Later by Sir Peter Blake
Silkscreen edition of 100
Image Size: 26" x 34.5"

Marilyn Monroe Black

Image Size: 26" x 17"

Both of the new images are selling fast and are sure to sell out. Full details of each of the new editions is available by clicking on the images or by visiting www.hepplestonefineart.com

Sir Peter Blake's work reflects his fascination with all streams of popular culture, and the beauty to be found in everyday objects and surroundings. Many of his works feature found printed materials such as photographs, comic strips or advertising texts, combined with bold geometric patterns and the use of primary colours. The works perfectly capture the effervescent and optimistic ethos of the sixties, but are also strikingly fresh and contemporary. There is also a strain of sentimentality and nostalgia running throughout his work, with particular focus towards childhood innocence and reminiscence, as can be seen clearly in his recent Alphabet series. Blake is renowned for his connection with the music industry, having produced iconic album covers for the Beatles, Paul Weller, The Who, and Oasis.

Philip Gray Original Paintings & Limited Editions

With his paintings hung in the White House under two administrations and celebrity collectors including Dolly Parton, Philip Gray’s artistic journey has led him a long way from his roots in Cork, Ireland.

Now one of Ireland’s most celebrated living artists, career highlights include winning the coveted “Best Up and Coming Artist 2007” award from the Fine Art Trade Guild and being a finalist for the “Best Selling Published Artist 2008”. Philip was also selected to represent Ireland in a major cultural festival held in the USA.

Born in 1959, from the age of 5 Philip loved art, and one of his earliest memories is being tutored in figurative drawing by a family friend, Trevor Scott, the founder of the renowned College of Art and Design in Dublin.

At the age of 16, Philip left school and joined the Irish Navy, a career choice that would inspire his successful artistic career later in life. Once he had established himself as a naval diver, he began to paint at sea and soon became prolific. He had the great advantage of having a unique perspective on Irish landscapes and seascapes as viewed from the Atlantic Ocean. After 17 years in the Navy, and with much encouragement from his wife and family, Philip relinquished his naval career and took the bold step of setting up on his own as an artist, a decision which he has never looked back from.

The magic in Philip’s art lies in his ability to use his artistic creativity as a natural form of communication. With the extraordinary beauty of the mountainous western island, Ireland, as his inspiration, Philip’s art provides us with the opportunity, albeit momentarily, to remove ourselves from the chaos of day to day life and appreciate the ordered beauty of nature.

He has recently returned from the Bahamas where he painted 60 ft under the sea in shark infested waters. To view the video of Philip painting under the sea, Click Here

Hepplestone Fine Art are delighted to be able to offer an exciting collection of Philip's pastel and oil paintings, along with a wide range of limited edition prints. Up to date availability can be found at http://www.hepplestonefineart.com/
